What if my pet or I gets bitten?
-
Move safely away from the animal
There is no need to kill or capture the snake, all pit vipers are covered under accessible antivenins. Call emergency services.
-

Remove any constrictive clothing or accessories. .
For dogs: harnesses or collars.
For Humans: rings, watches, shoes, socks etc
Use a marker to circle the bite site and add the time of the incident. This helps track swelling.
-

Stay calm
Remember to breathe consciously and keep the bite site elevated at or above heart level.
-

Get to medical care!
Death is rare when medical care is received quickly in most cases. Drive your pet to the nearest vet . For Humans call medical services if possible. DO NOT TRY TO DRIVE YOURSELF!
WHAT NOT TO DO!
DO NOT:
-Use a snake bite kit or mouth to suck the venom out! his can cause much more tissue damage.
-Cut or lacerate the wound! This is a very outdated practice.
-Add ice to the wound, this can cause blood flow issues and further tissue damage.
-apply a tourniquet, this can trap the venom at the bite site and destroy tissue
