Desert Night Snake (Hypsiglena chlorophaea) This small, nocturnal snake is easily recognized by its distinctly triangular head, prominent dark eyestripe, elliptical pupils, and a pale body patterned with dark spots and a notable blotch located just behind the head. It typically inhabits arid and semi-arid environments such as deserts, grasslands, and rocky hillsides, where it actively preys on lizards and small rodents for sustenance. Due to their angular head and elliptical pupils, they are commonly mistaken for venomous species, which highlights the fact that many of the general rules for identifying venomous snakes are often misleading or inaccurate. The only reliable way to determine if a snake is venomous is to become familiar with the specific species found in your local area and understand their unique characteristics.
